Tencent’s Mobile Replacement for PUBG Takes in $14M Within 72 Hours After Release

“Game for Peace,” a mobile replacement title for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile that failed to get approval from local regulators, took in $14 million within 72 hours of its release. As of last Friday, Game for Peace was the most downloaded free game and top grossing game in Apple’s China App Store. Tencent decided to take down PUBG and replace it with Game for Peace, a largely identical but more sanitized version of the game, after the company waited for more than a year for approval to monetize the mobile version of a global blockbuster title.

The tech giant obtained approval from regulators last month to generate revenue from the new title, so users are now allowed to buy skins and other in-game items for real money. The company is set to unveil its latest earnings report later this week. On Monday, its online music platform subsidiary Tencent Music Entertainment Group plunged more than 3.5% after the company announced Guomin Xie, a board member and co-president, resigned due to personal reasons.
