First off, there’s nothing all that surprising about this. Destiny 2 is an extant game going through an absolutely massive transition: not only is it switching up a huge number of in-game systems and adding in a large yearly drop of content, it’s also going free-to-play and adding untold millions of Guardians that I’m sure we’ll be getting numbers on in the next few days. Given that, some server instability is expected and normal, even if it’s disappointing. But right now the servers seem to be struggling with the new influx of players: I’m currently sitting in a login queue after receiving several “Destiny 2 servers are unavailable” error messages, and I’m hearing a whole lot of people saying the same.
I also got a login queue right after launch, but was able to play within about 15 minutes, which is a perfectly acceptable timeframe. I got a ton of those little “attempting to contact Destiny 2 servers” messages as I played, however, and got kicked from my activities into orbit several times. Recently, however, I was kicked from the game entirely and haven’t been able to get back in for about 30 minutes. A quick look at Twitter shows a ton of other people with similar problems.
My trouble seems to roughly correlate with the time that kids might have been getting home from school, and we can only expect traffic to increase as 5:00 PM rolls around on the east coast and we move into the busy evening time. Again, this isn’t entirely unexpected, and I’d urge patience: it can be hugely difficult to prepare for a launch on this scale, particularly for a AAA game with as much going on as Destiny 2. I’d expect trouble to continue for a little while, but I’d be surprised if it kept going until tomorrow.
So far Shadowkeep has been fun, however, even if it’s taking me a moment to wrap my head around the myriad new systems on offer. Stay tuned for more updates as things progress. So far, let’s chalk it up to massive interest, which is never a bad thing.
