The next pitched battle between Sony and Microsoft in their console wars is starting to heat up. The latest news to surface is courtesy of some Microsoft insiders who say that the next-gen flagship Xbox will be more advanced than the Sony PlayStation 5.

Editor of Seasoned Gaming, Ainsley Bowden has revealed that his rock solid and reliable Microsoft insiders have confirmed that the Microsoft Xbox One flagship successor, codenamed Anaconda, will indeed be more advanced than the Sony PlayStation 5 as previously tipped. The latest confirmation comes on the heels of Sony’s recent revelations around the specifications for the PlayStation 5. Microsoft has previously indicated it was going to build the most powerful console yet seen, and the revelation of Sony’s specifications has apparently cemented this view.

Revisiting the specs and capabilities of the PlayStation 5 is revealing. Sony has confirmed that it will run on an AMD APU comprised of a 7 nm 2-based octa-core chip and a Navi—based GPU architecture. It will support real-time ray tracing and resolutions up to 8K. Microsoft’s next Xbox, based on the new information is going to outgun even this, which is exciting to say the least. Even if it is based on identical architecture, it could achieve better performance through higher clock speeds, faster RAM and/or VRAM, and/or additional cores.

However, as we all know, raw performance isn’t everything. Microsoft currently ships the most powerful of the current gen consoles in the shape of the Xbox One X, yet Sony has maintained a substantial lead over Microsoft in console sales. At last count in January, Sony had shipped 91.6 million PS4 consoles. This compares with Microsoft’s total, which is less than half of this at over 40 million consoles sold world-wide. It is clear, however, Microsoft wants to ensure that it isn’t outgunned when the first salvo is launched this time around.

Since then, I have been particularly interested in all things Apple, but also enjoy exploring and experimenting with any computing platform that I can get my hands on – I am the definitive early adopter! I have always been interested in how we can use technology to shape and improve our lives, most recently using it to record, mix and master my debut record, Acuity – Nature | Nurture.
