Erasing history by Liam Doolan 4 hours ago The original creator of the survival crafting game Minecraft will be excluded from the title’s 10-year anniversary celebrations due to his “comments and opinions” on social media, according to Microsoft. Since Marcus “Notch” Persson sold Minecraft to Microsoft for $2.5 billion back in 2014, the tech giant has released the game on as many platforms as possible and unified platforms with the “Better Together” update.
Microsoft and the developer Mojang both want to maintain the game’s family-friendly image as well. A spokesperson from Microsoft said Persson had not been involved with the game since he sold off the rights and also reiterated the main reason behind the decision to exclude him from the anniversary plans: “His comments and opinions do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang and are not representative of ‘Minecraft.” Last month, loading screen references to Persson were removed from the game. In saying this, he’s still credited as the game’s creator.
The upcoming event, taking place in the capital of Sweden on 17th May, will celebrate the “past, present and exciting future” of the now decade-old franchise. To date, the game has around 91 million players on a monthly basis and is the second best-selling game of all-time, right behind the classic puzzle title, Tetris. [via variety.com]
