Excited about Samsung’s Galaxy S11? That makes sense. Insiders have revealed a major battery upgrade, newly symmetrical design, class leading-display, next-gen biometrics and a potentially game-changing camera. But now we know there will be no ‘Galaxy S11’. Samsung’s Galaxy S11 branding has been scrappedIce Universe Samsung Galaxy S11: Everything We Know So Far [Updated] Forbes Gordon Kelly Influential Samsung insider Max Weinbach of XDA Developers has today blown the roof off Samsung’s big reveal that there will be no Galaxy S11 successor to the Galaxy S10. Instead, Weinberg has attained the first images of Samsung’s all-new phone and confirmed the range will be rebranded Galaxy S20 (which was tipped but doubted). 01/13 Update: Industry insider Ice Universe has now obtained the Galaxy S20 logo:Samsung’s leaked Galaxy S20 logo – Ice UniverseInterestingly, the model Weinberg got his hands on is the ‘Galaxy S20+ 5G’, as you can see from its loading screen, and this is expected to be joined by the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20 Ultra:The first Galaxy S20+ 5G hands-on images reveal Samsung has rebranded its flagship phonesMax Weinbach / XDA DevelopersAnd it only gets more complicated from there. Why? Because, as Ice Universe explains, the alignment of the new phones with the models they replace is going to baffle a lot of users:Galaxy S20 = Galaxy S10e replacementGalaxy S20+ = Galaxy S10 replacementGalaxy S20 Ultra = Galaxy S10+ replacement Yes, Samsung is pushing the standard branding to the budget model (as Apple did calling the iPhone XR2 the iPhone 11) but it is also swapping the + branding to the standard model. This is going to drive some users around the bend. Given there will also be 4G and 5G editions of the phones (with 4G not listed in the name), you can count on someone ordering the Galaxy S20+ in expectation of receiving a Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G flagship and getting the 4G mid-range model instead. On the plus side (pun not intended), you can see the logic behind Samsung’s change of mind: the name ties into 2020 and, assuming 2030 will bring the Galaxy S30, it means Samsung will not run into Apple’s branding mess as it leapt from the iPhone 8 to X to XS to 11 (and there’s a rumored iPhone 9 coming very soon as well!).
