Wind Waker Island Appears in Breath of the Wild

Breath of the Wild is an undeniably massive game. There are tons of hidden nooks and crannies for players to explore, sometimes to an overwhelming degree. Thanks to its size, it appears some easter eggs have gone pretty much unnoticed since its release two years ago, including a hidden reference to The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

The easter egg in question is a reference to Wind Waker’s Outset Island, which bears an uncanny resemblance to Breath of the Wild’s Lurelin village when viewed from the correct angle. The two have plenty in common, from the placement of certain huts to a very similar ladder. There are also a few geographical similarities between the two, including a nearby land formation. The easter egg was first noticed by Jon Cartwright of the popular YouTube channel GameXplain, who was recording a different video when he realized how similar the two actually were.

It’s pretty incredible the Breath of The Wild still has secrets that have gone unnoticed. There are sure to be a few more for players to find, too, as the game is absolutely massive. It’s no small secret that some easter eggs take years to find, and there have been instances of developers leaking such secrets just so gamers stand a chance of seeing the hidden content. Time will tell if Nintendo has to do this with Breath of the Wild, but it’ll likely be a while before it comes to that, if it ever does.

At least players can now spend some more time digging through the game’s locations trying to find any other hidden references. The Breath of the Wild sequel is probably still a ways away, so it should help keep gamers occupied until then.

It’ll be interesting to see what types of easter eggs pop up in future entries in the franchise, including the sequel. The game will reuse Breath of The Wild’s map, so there may not be as references like this one, but Nintendo is sure to slip in a few subtle nods for eagle-eyed fans of the series. Luckily, hunting for those secrets is one of the game’s most entertaining aspects.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now for Nintendo Switch and Wii U.
